Trips! (Manila, Pila and Liliw!)

Hola, fieles seguidores!! jejeje

Escribo unas pocas lineas antes de bajarme al comedor del IRRI, a meterme entre pecho y espalda un platazo de arroz con algo sustancioso (hoy va a ser algo que en su día no tuvo escamas, que ayer ya me inflé de pescaito jejeje).

Si no recuerdo mal, fue el 6 de Junio cuando un pequeño grupo de amiguetes (Nikos, Pogs, V-Vay, Ho y un servidor) decidimos hacer algo de provecho en nuestro tiempo libre, y por sugerencia de los 2 filipinos, decidimos ir a Liliw, un pueblecito no muy lejos de Los Baños, conocido en la provincia de Laguna por las sandalias artesanales que hacen sus lugareños.
A unos pocos kilómetros de esta población, se encuentra Pila, donde según me cuentan por aquí, su arquitectura bebe muchísimo de la española, pero sinceramente, a mi me parece mucho más parecida a lo que podría ser casitas típicas del sur de los EEUU... Missouri? Louisiana? tal vez... (poca influencia veo yo aquí de nuestra tierra!).

Total, tras el paseito por Pila, acabamos en Liliw, donde primeramente nos merendamos unos gofres horriblemente sabrosos (juzgue ud. mismo la pinta del susodicho manjar en las fotos!), y posteriormente, pues nos pusimos a patear las calles del pueblecillo. Es una sensación un poco extraña la que te acompaña cuando viajar por estos sitios, ya que aquí el turismo es poco común, así que nuestra presencia (tengamos en cuenta que un griego de 1,90, un coreano que parece un fotógrafo del National Geographic y un ejem! atractivo español en el mismo grupo ya de por sí llaman la atención) alteró durante unas horas la apacible marcha de tan cálido lugar...
Curiosa la forma que tienen de llamar la atención estas gentes a todo aquello que no parezca nacido en las Filipinas... al grito de "Hey Joe!", o "Eh! Amigo!" (con acentazo made-in-USA), al mirar al rostro demandante, encuentras una amplia sonrisa, normalmente acompañada de un pulgar alzado, o manos al cielo, señales todas ellas de triunfo y alegría... gente feliz la que habita estas tierras...
A destacar, un grupete de niños jugando en mitad de una calle, que no paraban de crujirse de risa cuando les respondí a su "Camaestá" (más o menos el saludo Filipino), con un sencillo y contundente "Hola!", y que entre correteos, ojos abiertos y risas contagiosas, iban siguiéndonos entre casas y coches.

La fruta que encuentras por aquí es, aparte de barata (baratísima!), de primera calidad, fresca, y se disfruta mucho, sobre todo (en mi opinión) cuando la sirven fría, y con hielo (granizado de mango... para caerse de culo!).

Como guinda al pastel de ese maravilloso día, acabamos comiendo en un sitio que yo he rebautizado (Los españoles lo llevamos en la sangre esto de rebautizar y recolonizar jajajajaja) como "El paraíso", un restaurante cuyo centro ocupa un laguito lleno de peces gato (esos que tienen bigotes), en cuya superficie flotan chozas hechas de bambú, donde puedes probar manjares de la tierra, entre ellos (gran descubrimiento amigos!) lo que llaman "pata", que viene siendo un CODILLO de cerdo (si, habéis oído bien, berlineses!), aunque algo menos sustancioso, pero igual de frito, jugoso y delicioso!. Aparte, pescados del lugar, que casi siempre suelen servir asados, como la "Tilapia" o el "Pez Leche" (éste último ni sé ni quiero saber el origen de su nombre).

En cuanto al fin de semana siguiente, pues... encontré en el correo electrónico del IRRI que había un viaje organizado para ir a Manila en un día, y hacer compras en centros comerciales (un viaje un poco coñazo a priori). Pero dado que tenía ilusión por ir a la capital de este país, y aún sabiendo que nos íbamos a tirar más del 80% del tiempo del viaje en un centro comercial, me decidí, y me apunté!

A destacar, el viaje por China Town (las primeras fotos del álbum), y la inmensa cantidad de "Jeep-nees", (podréis verlos en varias fotos, son los taxis filipinos, el sistema de transporte más conocido, y casi todos son plateados). Respecto a los Jeep-nees es muy curioso su funcionamiento (yo todavía no lo he pillao jajajajaja); esta especie de "autobús militar con tunning" tiene un destino al que más o menos apunta, y que creo (eso dice la leyenda) que al final hasta llega y todo (por confirmar queda esta información). Básicamente el sistema es muy sencillito: El pseudo-bus se va llenando de pasajeros, que lo paran alzando la mano, y allá donde quieras bajarte, al grito de "para!" (muy español, eh? jajaja), pues el conductor te deja. Preguntas...

- ¿Cuánto cuesta? Pues durante el día, 7 pesos (unos 10 céntimos de euro). Durante la noche, y dependiendo de si eres nacional o extranjero, y del destino, pues la cosa se puede poner hasta en 80 pesos, que fue lo que pagamos (previa negociazión) hace no mucho al volver desde los Baños después de unas cervezas.

- ¿Cuál es el recorrido que hace? ah! amigo mío, esto es un país de aventura y tranquilidad, lo más divertido del asunto, es que si andas en una urgencia, subirte en uno de estos cacharros puede arruinarte el día, o bien hacerlo el triple de divertido, porque seguro que acabas enrredado en una pelea de gallos, o cantando en un karaoke (deporte nacional!) jajajaja un consejo de oro: "take it easy", tómatelo con calma, o perderás los nervios.

- ¿Cómo es el tráfico en Filipinas? Caótico, lento, aparentemente sin reglas fijas, pero divertido! jajaja En serio, ayer en una conversación trataba de averiguar cuáles son las normas de circulación, pero es que si en España nos las saltamos a la torera, aquí directamente se las inventan! La mejor de todas es: Si oyes un pitido, ponte a mirar pa to los laos, porque significa que un vehículo ( o bicicleta, o carro tirado por caballos, o lo que sea) trata de adelantarte POR ALGÚN LADO (izquierda, o derecha, qué más da, si hay espacio por los dos lados? jajajaja). Lo "bueno" del asunto es que aquí todos los coches y vehículos en general tienen motores poco potentes, y casi nunca circulan por encima de los 60/80 km/h.

ENGLISH VERSION

I´m writting these lines just a moment before I go to the IRRI cafeteria, thinking about which will be my selection together (of course together!) with our daily wonderful rice (I´m not trying to be ironic, I swear! hehehe).

Sooooo many things have happened in just a few days, that I´m wondering how to make a good summary about everything!
Going back to the past, I think it was on the 6th of June when a small-but-smart group of adventurers (Nikos, V-Vay, Ho, Pogs, and myself) decided to go on a savage, misterious and crazy trip... A trip to Liliw, the city of the flip-flops!! hahahaha!
Before we arrived to our final destination, we stopped in a little city, Pila, whose houses have, according to my filipino (not philippino... thanks Pogs!) friends, a weight of heritage from the Spanish architecture; however, it was difficult for me to notice this, and in my opinion, I think there are much more similarities with South U.S.A. architecture... let´s say... Lousiana? Missouri?

Finally, we arrived to Liliw, and the remarkable thing was (appart from the millions of flip flops shops hehehe) that everybody seemed to be looking at our group (I know that a 1,90 m. greek guy, a "National-Geographic" corean photographer (Ho looked like this! hahaha), and a hairy spanish guy, appart from 2 crazy filipinos, by themselves look a bit strange) and the thing is that everybody here seems to react at everything that doesn´t look like a philippine man\woman; the reason to justify this is that constantly people were hailing us with basically two methods: "Hey Joe!" is the most common one, which means that they believe that you are a U.S. citizen, and second one is "Hey amigo", or "Hey, americano!", which means exactly the same! hahahaha
One of the most faboulous things was to see how a little group of children reacted guffawing when I answered their greetings!! It was sooo funny!! hahaha

The fruit that we found on the local shops outside in the street looked really fresh and delicious, in spite of we (the 3 foreigners) hadn´t seen it before! Anybody could help telling me again the name of the prickly red fruits with that gelatinous (and superb) content?... Rambutan!!! thanx Pogs!! hehehe

And to crown this wonderful day, we went back to Los Baños, to a place that I have personally renamed as "The paradise" (You will be paralyzed in this paradise! hahaha :-P).
Basically, is a cute place in which center there is a lake full of "cat fishes" (the ones with moustaches), and floating all over the surface, there are bamboo houses, where you can have your dinner meanwhile some musicians will make more enjoyable your meal... sounds nice, doesn´t it?
One tip if you are thinking about going to this place, don´t miss the "pata"... which is, basically a fried "knuckle" (fried elbow of a pork)... is this a good translation? uhm... If you have already travelled to Germany, for sure you will know the meaning!! hahaha ;-)
Another recommendation should be the "milk fish" (don´t ask about the reason for that name! hahaha) or Tilapia, both local fishes, and both delocious!!

Next issue... oh yes!! After this amazing journey, I had the chance (next weekend) to travel to Manila. Despite the main purpose of the trip was basically going to some malls and buy stuffs, I decided to go, cos I thought that maybe I could have the chance to make some nice pictures! (I think I did, but please, don´t be to harsh judging them! hahaha)

Things to highlight ´bout this travel... the walk that we did around "China Town" (mostly the first part of the photo album), and also the huge quantity of "Jeep-nees" (this is the way the philippinos call one vehicle that I could define as an hybrid between a bus, a 2nd world war jeep, and some "car tuning" work on it).
These Jeep-nees are really common all around the Philippines, but of course Manila is a good place to spend some time having a look at their "behaviour"... questions? hahahaha

- How does it work? Basically, one jeep-nee have already a destination, and it is supposed that it will reach this destination at some point (the legend says this hahahaha). Before it does, you have the chance to stop one of this machines just raising your hand, and paying (during daylight, and supposing that you are not coming back to your place after having too much beer... hahaha) 7 pesos (this is around 10 cents of euro). If you are trying to ride at night, and you look like me, maybe you have to pay 5 to 10 times more, but that depends on your negotiation skills!! hahaha
Ok, so now, I am inside the beast, but I want it to stop!! How do I do it? Easy! just tell the driver "para!" Which literally, in spanish means the same, but translated to english is... "stop!" hahaha. Piece of cake, isn´t it? Talking about this issue, a new question arises...

- How is the traffic in the Philippines?
From my honest point of view, it is caothic, slow, but harmless and enjoyable!! hahaha
According to my short experience, it looks like everytime you are driving and you hear somebody honking behind you, you should look both sides, left and right, cos you never know!!
The golden rule is... relax, and take it easy; don´t get stressed, cos this is not Europe, (sometimes is much better!! :-D) and if you are in a hurry, my personal tip is that you better ride a trycicle (an alternative an personal way of travelling inside the city), or buy yourself a car, a bike, a horse, or whatever! hehehe
Isn´t it nice to forget about your car, and just relax and spend some time with some filipinos inside a jeep-nee?? You MUST try this!! :-)

Eagle Eye Resort

Hola gente!!

Acabo de llegar hace un par de horas del Eagle Eye Resort, una especie de pequeño complejo turístico, lleno de casitas y chozas pegadas al mar, localizado en Batangas, al sur de Luzón (La isla más al norte de Filipinas). Dentro del IRRI (International Rice Research Institute), yo estoy trabajando para la CESD (Crop and Environmental Science Division), y ha sido con éste grupo, de unas 15 personas, con los que me he ido allí a realizar lo que ellos llaman "Team Building Activity", que es, básicamente, una buena excusa (muy a la española) pa pegarse un par de diitas en la playa relajado!! jajajaajaja

Hemos estado realizando actividades que en teoría nos unen más como grupo, nos facilitan la comunicación y la interacción, las labores del trabajo..... vamos, resumiendo, aparte de la parte seria, (que fueron unas 3 horas hablando sobre nuestra personalidad y comportamiento), el resto del viaje ha sido cachondeo y relax!! Sesion de karaoke, mucha comida (MUCHA MUCHA!! y muy rica!!), paseos en kayak, y actividades lúdicas varias... no se lo montan nada mal los filipinos como véis!! Han sido varios días muy seguidos donde han pasado muchas cosas, así que esta semana prometo escribir un poquito más!!... ya os pondré al día, en el siguiente post!!

ENGLISH VERSION

Wow! It's been a great time these past two days! I've been on a 2-days-trip with my colleagues from the CESD, (Crop and Environmental Science Division) doing what here they called "team building activity", which is basically a good exercise to keep (or better to gain) group brotherhood and fraternity... we've been drinking, eating (I swear, that maybe too much! hehehe), singing, swimming, and doing some group exercises, in a resort which name is Eagle Eye Resort.

Eagle Eye Point Resort is located in Batangas, Philippines, a place well-known for its dive sites. It is a two-hour drive from Manila. The resort is not easily accessible as it is in a remote location. But it is a great place if you want to be away from the city.Eagle Point is a nice place for relaxation. It is a very quiet and peaceful place and the view is breathtaking.

Episodio 1: Un nuevo comienzo \ Episode 1: A new beginning

Queridos amigos, familiares, colegas, y extraños (ésto último aplicable a los que habéis llegado aquí por azar) :

Éste es, en verdad, el segundo intento de hacer un "blog", o "diario en la web", en mi vida. El primero quedó atrás hace años cuando por aquél entonces tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar una beca Erasmus en Hannover.

Éste segundo, y no menos importante, lo inicio ahora que me encuentro en Las Filipinas.
Así que para todos aquellos que queráis leer de mí, os invito a pasaros por aqui y leer... no prometo actualizarlo tan a menudo como quiera, pero, esta vez, puedo jurar que sí tendrá más contenido que el anterior (¡Que la verdad, no será muy difícil tampoco conseguirlo! jajajaja).
No va a ser por esta razón ni de lejos un "diario",y además no contaré en él todas mis intimidades (no es cuestión, que a mi no me pagan ni un duro, no como a la Belén Esteban!), aunque intentaré hacerlo, (como viene siendo habitual en otros aspectos de mi vida), poco serio, y ameno! jejeje
También encontraréis unas líneas (con básicamente el mismo contenido) en inglés, para los que no puedan seguir mis aventuras en Español... así que esto es todo por el momento!!

Dear all:

My name is Lalo, for all of you that still don´t know me, and also for the rest that didn´t know my nickname (I know that Eduardo sounds pretty much exotic! hehehe).

This is my second attempt to begin a "blog". The first one contained just one entry, I began it a few years ago, when I was doing an Erasmus grant (exchange scholarship) in Hannover, (Germany). Now I´m living in The Philippines!!! It´s being, and for sure it will be, an amazing experience, so I really hope that this second chance would be a much greater blog (it´s hard to make it worse!! hahaha), so I will be updating it from time to time, and you will also could try to write down some lines, to keep in contact... for all of you that are expecting some photos, I still don´t know where I will publish them (maybe here, or maybe I´ll send you the link to another web page!), but don´t worry, it won´t take too much time! Please, be patient! hehehe :-)
The first part of each entry would be written in Spanish, but of course you could also follow my adventures in English!!
